Millions of Chickens Killed in 5-Alarm Fire at Farina Farms Inc. in Illinois, One of Nation’s Largest Free-Range Egg Facilities
by Jim Hoft, May. 30, 2024
FBB: Is the cause of this fire just an accident? Does the photographed size and intensity remind you of any other recent "fires?" What is the impact on our food supply? |
A massive fire broke out at Farina Farms Inc. in Marion County, Illinois, on Wednesday night, resulting in the deaths of millions of chickens.
The farm is one of the largest free-range egg facilities in the country.
The smoke was so dense that it was visible on FOX 2’s Power Doppler radar, reaching altitudes between 13,000 and 15,000 feet and could be seen for miles around, WGN9 reported
The cause of the fire remained unknown. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the impact on the local economy and food supply is expected to be significant.

If Bayer really wanted to stand with farmers, it would stop selling them toxics
GMWATCH, May 23, 2024
Facing billions of dollars in payouts from settlements and trials by farmers and homeowners suffering from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and with the scientific case mounting on Roundup’s risks – including ties to leukemia, kidney and liver disease, preterm birth and neurodevelopmental problems – Bayer has launched a new PR blitz to promote its beleaguered herbicide, write Stacy Malkan, Anna Lappé and Kendra Klein. A full-page ad in the Washington Post promotes the "safety and benefits" of Roundup. And a recently launched website called Modern Agriculture Alliance calls on communities to "Stand with farmers, not trial lawyers". But let’s be clear who is standing with farmers and others impacted by glyphosate exposure: those trial lawyers are litigating on behalf of more than 100,000 people, including farmers and their families, who have suffered devastating health consequences – including death – allegedly linked to the herbicide. And they’re doing so up against a company with PR moves pulled from the pages of the tobacco industry playbook. Bayer’s latest campaign involves a state-by-state strategy to pass legislation to take away the rights of farmers and others to sue the company if they get sick with cancer – legislation that Bayer itself has helped to write.

FAMILY FARMING and the 2024 FARM BILL
2024 SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS
by National Farmers Union
The 2018 Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2023, and Congress reached an agreement to extend the
current farm bill for one year. While an extension was necessary to ensure the continuation of
essential farm policies and programs for the 2024 crop year, full reauthorization with important
reforms to current farm and food policy is required to meet the needs of family farmers, ranchers,
consumers, and our communities.
The farm economy is cyclical, and commodity price and input cost volatility are among the chief
reasons that family farmers and ranchers are forced out of business. Farm bills should be written with
tough times in mind so that programs serve as a safety net. Farm bills should also principally direct
benefits toward family farmers and ranchers.
Farm bills are best when they are forward-looking. Lawmakers must ensure the next farm bill
anticipates future needs, including by strengthening farm bill conservation and renewable energy
programs, which help farmers implement practices that fight climate change, build soil health, and
increase resilience.
The farm bill is also a food bill. The nutrition title is key to reducing hunger and poverty, and
improving food and nutrition security.
The following policies and provisions should be included in the 2024 Farm Bill.
