Organic farmers help monarch butterflies
by GMWATCH, January 11, 2023
Don and Barb Dunklee work to counter some of the devastating effects of GM glyphosate-tolerant crops on the US ecosystem
ecently we announced in our Daily Digest some findings from yet another in a series of studies carried out by different groups of scientists over many years showing that the spread of GM glyphosate-tolerant crops is a major cause of the decline of monarch butterflies in the US. The glyphosate herbicide sprayed on these crops kills the milkweed that is the sole food for monarch larvae.
In response to our report, Michigan organic farmer Don Dunklee sent us some beautiful photographs of the monarchs that he and his wife Barb encourage to breed in one of their greenhouses. They plant milkweed in the greenhouse in between the crops, as well as in open fields on the farm, in an attempt to repair some of the damage that GM crops continue to wreak on these iconic creatures.
Processed food is the real "pandemic," and the government couldn’t care less about it
by Ethan Huff, January 9, 2023
The government and media made much ado about nothing concerning the Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) as they together destroyed society to keep people "safe" from a "virus" that has never even been proven to exist. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people die every single year from eating processed food and nobody in a position of power says a word.
New research published in the journal JAMA Network says that between 280,000 and 325,000 people, depending on which datasets are used, die annually from obesity caused by a "really dangerous ‘virus’ that’s impacting everyone." That "virus," the study explains, is "highly addictive high-carb and sugary processed foods that are making everyone fat, lazy, and riddled with diseases."
Why new GM techniques must be strictly regulated
by Heike Moldenhauer, January 9, 2023
Those in the food business, both retailers and producers, will likely be aware that there has been movement in the world of genetic engineering, in both the UK and the EU, where, until now, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been strictly regulated. Due to risk assessment, as well as traceability and labelling requirements for GMOs, business operators and consumers can rely on high food safety and transparency standards. But these key achievements are under threat. In England, the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Bill – currently going through the parliamentary process – proposes to exclude new GMOs (those that have been made with techniques like CRISPR/Cas) from any regulation. In the EU the European Commission has announced a proposal on deregulation of new genomic techniques in its work plan for 2023, to be tabled in the second quarter of next year.
