GMO Food Labeling Rules ‘Restrictive and Unclear,’ Lawsuit Alleges

Center for Food Safety (CFS) and a coalition of food labeling nonprofits and retailers filed an appeal earlier this month with the 9thCircuit Court of Appeals, challenging a previous ruling that allows the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to continue using the misleading terminology "bioengineered" and avoid labeling the majority of genetically engineered (GMO) foods.

In the lower court case, CFS argued that USDA must label all GMO foods, refined or not, using terminology that consumers understand, such as "GE" or "GMO."

CFS argued that the labels must appear on the package itself, without requiring consumers to scan a QR code or text a phone number for each food they purchase.

The district court held that the USDA’s decision to allow GMO foods to only be labeled with a "QR" code was unlawful, and that USDA must instead add disclosure options to those foods under USDA’s National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard.

According to the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, federal regulations cost the US economy approximately $1.9 trillion every year in "direct costs, lost productivity, and higher prices." In 2016, one of the issues that then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ran on was reducing burdensome red tape on businesses. While in office, Trump ordered the government to eliminate two regulations for every new one a federal agency created.

Under President Joe Biden, heavy constraints made a comeback in his first year in office. That’s despite federal judges ruling he didn’t have the legislative authority to create many of the rules. On March 21, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced a new proposal requiring businesses to report their carbon footprint to the agency. Some say America’s farmers are now under siege by the SEC.

WFP Convoys With Food Supply Arrive In Tigray Region

World Food Programme confirmed that its convoys arrived in North West Tigray via Gondar corridor.

WFP confirmed that its heavy trucks with relief food entered the region. The food supply will be delivered to communities in different areas of the region in the coming days.

WFP confirmed that more food, nutrition, medical cargo will follow imminently, via all routes possible.

FDA declares lab-grown chicken ‘safe to eat’ — but scientists, food safety advocates have questions

Describing the development as "a food revolution," the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday declared lab-grown chicken meat developed by Berkeley, California-based food-tech firm Upside Foods is safe for human consumption.

Upside Foods "will use animal cell culture technology to take living cells from chickens and grow the cells in a controlled environment to make the cultured animal cell food," the FDA said.
