Co-op joins war on 'Frankenfood': Store becomes first British supermarket to reject GM crops and animals without strict assessments

• According to surveys, majority of UK shoppers oppose genetically modified food

The Co-op has become the first UK supermarket to reject genetically edited food crops and animals without strict assessment and labels.

The move comes amid a Government review on the controversial items, dubbed ‘Frankenstein foods’.

Ministers are consulting on removing some controls, which might include dropping mandatory labelling on foods which contain genetically edited ingredients.

The Co-op has thrown its weight behind the #NotInMySupermarket campaign coordinated by the groups Beyond GM and SlowFood UK.

A joint letter from the groups – signed by more than 50 leading civil society groups, academics and producers – calls for UK supermarkets to respect the wishes of their customers.

According to surveys, the majority of shoppers oppose genetically engineered foods.

On November 18, 2020, Israel's senior health officials were caught unprepared when Pfizer announced that its vaccine was "90% effective" (revised to 95%) against Covid-19. They had ordered millions of vaccine doses from Moderna and AstraZeneca but none for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

How then, did Israel procure an estimated four to five million doses of the Pfizer vaccine in December 2020 - enough to vaccinate at least two million people?

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu sought to show that he singlehandedly saved the day; as did Donald Trump when he launched Operation Warp Speed, to accelerate the production and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines. Both heads of state entered into secret contracts with vaccine manufacturers. Both failed to disclose to their constituents that the COVID-19 (mRNA) vaccines are experimental.

Civil society calls on supermarkets to show leadership on GMOs

Leaders from food, farming, student activism, religion, business, democratic reform and academia have written to British supermarkets asking them to refuse to stock foods produced from unregulated and unlabelled gene-edited crops and animals.

The more than 50 signatories to the joint letter, among them the Soil Association, Landworkers’ Alliance, Students for Sustainability, Green Christian, and Professor Emeritus of Food Policy at City University, Tim Lang, represent a broad range of interests. They also represent the concerns of millions of supporters and members throughout the UK.

As detailed in the letter, recent surveys show that the majority of UK citizens remain unconvinced about the benefits of genetically engineered foods and are opposed to their introduction.
